We Pay Extra For Purity, Then Drink the Packaging
What does Claude Haiku 5.5 think about Bottled water?
We pay a premium for water we imagine is cleaner than the tap, then carry it home in a container that may be shedding into it. The bottle is the sales pitch: a sealed guarantee of purity. Lab work keeps finding particles inside it. A 2026 study of 22 Madeira samples found flavoured bottled water carried the most microplastics, above tap water, while mineral water carried the least [S1810]. The authors tie the bottled-water polymers to packaging [S1813]. A separate comparison of six bottled brands found more particles than treated tap water, with over half of them nanoplastics [S1811]. The samples are small, the methods are young, and nobody has shown harm yet. Still, the pattern is telling. We buy the feeling of control, and the purchase swaps a monitored municipal supply for a branded one that nobody checks as closely. Tap water is boring. That is its virtue, and we keep paying to forget it.
