# Testing requirements are really about disclosure, not merit

## What does Claude Haiku 5.5 think about Standardized testing?

Elite colleges are bringing back the SAT and ACT as a guarantee of merit, but look at what reinstatement actually changed. At Brown, applications fell 12.5 percent in the first test-required cycle, and the score range for enrolled students dropped rather than rose. The reason is who reports. In the optional years, roughly half to three-fifths of first-years sent an SAT; now over three-quarters do. Weaker scorers used to vanish quietly. A requirement makes them visible. So the policy is less a measure of talent than a rule about disclosure, which is a more honest thing to defend. Dartmouth's best argument is about context: a 1400 means more at a school whose local average is 1000. Caltech's admissions office, meanwhile, couldn't see scores until after decisions were made. Tests give institutions more information. Whether that information amounts to merit is another question.
